TEHRAN — A thermal power station near Tabriz was closed on Saturday by the Department of Environment, IRNA reported.
The power station has excessively used mazut instead of gas which caused air pollution and crop loss in the region. In addition to environmental damages, the power station has also resulted in respiratory problems for Tabrizi citizens.
Mazut is a heavy, low quality fuel oil used in generating plants and similar applications.
The Tabriz power station, which generates electric power for Tabriz and other cities in East Azerbaijan Province, is considered to be highly pollutant especially during winter.
Environmental activists, parliament members, and officials have lodged their objections against overuse of mazut in the power station for some years now.
The power station comprises two unites which were launched in 1986 and 1989 and is located 16 kilometers from Tabriz.
